Exfoliants come in all different forms and types within the skin care industry. They vary from granules that provide mechanical exfoliation to fruit acid varieties and enzyme varieties.
Exfoliants help to remove dead cells and debris on the surface of the skin resulting in fresher, cleaner and clearer skin. Granules assist in buffing off dead cells that are ready to come off essentially, they really don’t do more than that. They will help to dislodge dead cells that are on the way out, they speed up the process.
Fruit acid or AHA (Alpha Hydroxy Acid) forms of exfoliation are much more effective, compared to other forms of exfoliation. AHA’s are the best ingredient known in all of skin care to micro exfoliate the skin. They work differently from granules, they actually dissolve the glue-like substance that holds the dead cell onto the skin. They only have the ability to dissolve dead cells not live cells. They are very clever ingredients as if there are no dead cells on a face they don’t exfoliate but instead they hydrate the skin. Fruit acids or AHA’s also have the added benefit of normalising the pH and increasing hydration levels significantly.
Enzymes are brilliant for all skin types even sensitised skins and teenage skins as they are naturally derived and are gently effective for all. Enzymes are typically derived from pumpkin, papaya, pineapple and pomegranate, they work by digesting and gobbling up rogue and redundant cells and debris on the surface of the face. Exfoliation will result in fresher, smoother, cleaner and clearer skin and will enhance your skin's ability to absorb other ingredients topically.
